DragonFly BSD

DragonFly BSD was created as a fork of FreeBSD 4.8 in order to take threading and symmetric multiprocessing in a diffeent direction. While the two OSs retain much in common, DragonFly has diverged in significant and interesting ways, becoming a hybrid kernel with Light Weight Kernel Threads (LWKT), and implementing HAMMER, a feature rich, native file system comperable to ZFS in many ways.

DragonFly initially used the FreeBSD Ports collection for third party software, switching to NetBSD's pkgsrc system with the 1.4 release, and finally moving to it's own, native ports system, DPorts, based heavily on FreeBSD Ports, even using it's pkgng tool for binary package management.
